Her life with challenges and victories, commenced at the tender age of 11 when she encountered the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
'I've cherished 22 years since my baptism, and my mother was among the pioneers of the Black Rock Branch when it lacked a dedicated chapel.' The Cox family's immersion into the Church materialized unexpectedly when Jackquilin stumbled upon two young missionaries cycling near their residence. Little did she realize that this serendipitous encounter would change the course of her young life.
'My mother surprised us with the revelation of her Mormon faith which we hadn’t known before,' Jackquilin reveals. This disclosure precipitated a series of transformative events. The missionary elders, unwitting catalysts of change, not only imparted religious knowledge but also fostered genuine friendships with the Cox family.
'After several enlightening discussions, one missionary extended the invitation for baptism, to which I eagerly assented,' Jackquilin recounts with a grin.
Yet, her journey was fraught with skepticism from acquaintances and familial discord concerning her newfound beliefs. Nevertheless, Jackquilin's resolute adherence to the tenets of the Church served as a beacon of strength amidst tribulations. The unwavering support of the missionary elders proved instrumental as they navigated her through the nuances of Mormonism.
In the summer of 2000, at the age of 12, Jackquilin experienced a profound spiritual awakening as she submerged herself in the waters of baptism. July 4th marked the beginning of her personal journey of faith. Reflecting on this momentous occasion, she reminisces, 'I'll forever cherish the pristine white attire my mother and I wore on my baptism day, embellished with my name on the collar.' The significance of the day was further magnified by the affection and support from Brother and Sister Tucker, senior missionaries who assumed the roles of surrogate grandparents. 'Their care and support amidst my formative years were invaluable; I never had grandparents, so their presence was a blessing,' she warmly recalls.
However, Jackquilin encountered adversity in her late teens due to her mother's battle with depression, leading to a tumultuous environment marked by anxiety and substance abuse. This strained relationship eventually prompted Jackquilin to seek autonomy, moving out on her own. In 2014, motherhood became her salvation, fostering self-love and strengthening her bond with her children. Reflecting on her past, she acknowledges, 'Prior to my children, I was on a destructive path.'
Tragedy struck in 2020 with her mother's death, exacerbated by the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. Facing financial hardships amidst funeral expenses and personal struggles, Jackquilin found solace in the unwavering support of her Church community. The Branch President and Relief Society sisters provided essential assistance, offering sustenance, transportation, and unwavering service. Recollecting this period, Jackquilin emphasizes, 'The Branch President's visit and the steadfast aid from numerous Relief Society sisters were truly remarkable.'
In August 2023, the Cox family relocated to the Oistin area, encountering fresh challenges. Establishing connections with the missionaries and the Oistin Branch required effort, but Elder Charlesworth and his companions extended a helping hand to Jackquilin, eager to facilitate missionary lessons for her children. Elder Charlesworth recalls, 'Sister Cox was always receptive and eager, desiring to share the blessings she had received with her children.' Once again, the camaraderie and support of Church members, this time within the Oistin Branch, provided solace to Jackquilin, fortifying her resolve, and rekindling her commitment to her faith.
Jackquilin Cox's narrative epitomizes the transformative influence of faith, guided by the Holy Ghost and nurtured within the community of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Amidst trials and triumphs, she continues to evolve, now entrusted with the responsibility of raising seven young children, buoyed by the teachings of her Savior and the unwavering support of her branch members.
